Digital Portfolio

Being a double major I not only had to take the business capstones but also an English capstone. One of the requirements for the class is to create a digital portfolio of your work. Ok, well that’s a cool idea but how do you go about that?

The first step is to think about what you want to display and who will be viewing it. Basically you are thinking about how your portfolio reflects you. For me, I am building my profile to showcase the diversity of my marketing and writing skills because I am not really sure what I am interested in. But for example one girl in my class is very interested in creative writing and therefore intends to only include those types of works, while someone else is focusing on her rhetorical theory pieces.
In my last two internships I have had work published in two pretty different fields, wedding content and genomics research. I decide to include these two pieces specifically because they have already been formatted and look amazing.

I know this doesn’t specifically have to go with marketing, however, while recently applying to jobs some companies ask for a website, blog or sample of your work. Once I have completed this for class credit I plan on including other work that is less writing specific so that individuals looking at my blog will be able to see the depth of my work and abilities.

I was advised to create my portfolio on Wordpress, which I have found relatively simple. And anything that I run into is easily remedied with a quick Google search. I would advise everyone in our class to begin thinking about creating a digital portfolio, because the beauty of these sites is they are not permanents and can be edited at any time.

Here is a link to my blog if anyone is interested, it is still a huge work in progress.

Personal Branding

When RGA visited Jocelyn gave a presentation on Personal Branding, which I found to be really funny. She broke down finding a job into four easy steps that are very relatable for college students:
    1. Identify and stalk
    2. Flirt
    3. Date well
    4. Get married and work at it
First you need to identify and stalk the company you are interested in. Research what they do, and begin following them on social media sites to keep up to date with their projects and needs. At this point you want to be identifiable as well, know what you are passionate about and let your online presents go away. In todays age of technology an online presents in more important then ever before.

Second you are going to want to “flirt” with the company you’re interested in. Be available; show that you are active on social networks and within communities. Be approachable, show that you are interested in them. Like dating, finding a job is a two way street. It is also advised that you know what you are talking about, so many times people put their foot in their mouths because they are not knowledgeable.

In the third step, we being dating. This is pretty simple, be where they are, reflect who you want to attract and don’t be too desperate. In this part I think of a saying my mom has used: birds of a feather flock together. To be included you need to show that you are similar, which gives you things to talk about and activities to do together… ending in friendship.

The final step is get married and work at! At this point you will have been hired and you need to work at getting to know the ins and outs of the company.

The Apple Craze

Apple has released their new product, the iPad mini and now the mini with retina display. With 3.1 million mega pixels and 2048x1536 resolution, the iPad mini is an oversized iPod touch and a smaller version of the iPad.  The mini has all of the features of the regular iPad only its smaller! What is the point of something that already exists, yes it is a different size, besides that what would I as a consumer gain from it? Apple is very excited on its 7.9 inches, .73 pound weight as well as its Siri and FaceTime capabilities, but this is not enough to persuade me to upgrade from an old iPad or replace my iTouch.

While watching a commercial for the iPad mini a film student commented on its promotion towards woman. As a consumer he noticed how it was continuously being placed in a purse or pocket bag.  As a female I did not pick up the same message, my message was why did Apple make something they already had and almost double the price of the Kindle Fire 2. An iPad is an accessory, and can be dressed up to match your outfit. Maybe he was right the iPad and iPad mini are a more female product. I typed in "iPad sleeve" and a gazillion results came up many of the covers were bright and colorful becoming a fashion statement more than a functionality. I am not saying there is anything wrong with having functionality with practicality, its a product trait that I usually base my purchase on.
There are 500,000 apps that the iPad mini is capable of accessing. So if you were to use 1 app per day that is about 1,369 years of daily app usage, if you used a new app per hour you would be occupied for about 57 years. However, with the rate that apps are begin created it will soon become nearly impossible to use and view every single one of them.

Facebook

Facebook may be one of the most influential aspects of teen life today. Whether it is looking at what your friends did last weekend or liking a company fan page the mind is being influenced. We were talking in one of my classes about the price at which Facebook shares closed at last week; the stocked closed at just about 64, significantly higher than what  people paid when Facebook was first introduced to the market at 38 per share.
I remember getting a Facebook account in high school; I would sit there for hours looking at other peoples photos and posts. Every time I would get on the computer for something my fingers would automatically enter Facebooks address, even if thats not where I was going.  And when my mom joined the social networking site I knew my account was past its lifespan, so I deleted it. For about five years I have gone without a Facebook account, and haven't missed it. However last week at work I was told I need to make an account in order to post to our company page. No matter my protests, my boss insisted. She said the same thing that my marketing classes have said before, Facebook and social media cites are becoming the new advertising platform. However, I still see Facebook the same as I did before.
It is not just a social cite anymore but rather a drug that people can become addicted to. This is a very bold statement to make but I can say from personal experience that Facebook can be addicting.  We are constantly posting and updating our social media cites so much that there is hardly any need to ask your friends “How was your weekend?” because Facebook has already told you.
Personally I find Facebook to be the least effective of the social media cites we work with. Out of Twitter, Linked in, and Facebook, FB has the least followers, about half are company employees, where as Linked in and Twitter are comprised of people that have worked with us, as well as individuals that are interested in the field of genetic research.

Black Friday

Year after year, stores and shoppers alike become even more crazy about Thanksgiving and Black Friday. Even though my birthday tends to land on Black Friday I still have not jump in line the night before with all the crowds of people, just to get that new Malibu Barbie.  Personally I think Black Friday is taken a little overboard, physically trampling employees trying to get into the doors, opening stores on Thanksgiving, but some people seem to really enjoy the mayhem. One article from Time magazine states: " On the negative side, shoppers spent less than expected; yet on the plus side (in terms of safety and for the sake of humanity), there were fewer shopping-related casualties than there have been in the past." HOLD THE PHONE, Time magazine seems to actually be glad that there was only one death, but bringing this back to reality; why are there any deaths over shopping? I really don't get it.  For the Time article click here

Not only do advertisements come out in the newspaper but technology has made it much easier to find the best deals and plan out a strategy. Sure I could spend Black Friday in line, battling cougars for the last popcorn maker/ DVR combo, but I would rather spend it on  slopes of Big Sky where I rarely find a line. However, for those crazy focus that think the Black Friday adventure sounds fun here are some tips that can help ensure your survival:

·      Pack supplies- “Black Friday is kinda like Vegas, you never know what’s going to happen”
·      Wear proper shoes- a shopping cart to the foot is a great strategy
·      Check out the adds and deals before- time and effort can be avoided, by shopping for your target item. Also check the store and plan out the more efficient shopping rout.
·      Night Deals- skip the chaos by snagging deals that begin Thursday night
·      Proof- bring the adds, no store can argue with printed proof
·      Skip the Mall- firstly the mall will be PACKED, secondly retailors may have already put these sales online
 ·     Check the return policy
·      Make sure that it is actually a deal- not all deals are good deal

For the dedicated Black Friday shoppers who wake up far to early, and bundles up in matching team outfits, just to stand out in the dark before your store opens, I commend you. You have chosen to take on the crowds and snag the best deals of the year. But be care and take note of these tips, because “Black Friday is kinda like Vegas, you never know what’s going to happen”.

Heartbreak Bow

So I totally know this post does not go with the theme of my blog, but I found this commercial so cool I had to say something.

I went through a few phases when I was a kid. From kindergarten to second grade I refused to wear pant, I was a total girly girl and only wore dresses. In third grade that all changed, I started to wear black and army green, cargo pants too. I don’t even remember why I changed my style, but now I was a Tomboy. All those Barbie’s and Polly Pocket dolls soon fell out of favor. All I wanted to do was adventure and treasure hunt but there weren’t really toys that were meant for girls that weren’t girly.

Today when watching TV I saw a commercial from Nerf for the Heartbreak Bow . I found it really cool that a company has finally made a toy that is equal to the boy model.

Valentine's Day

As Valentine's Day comes around we are all thinking about the perfect gift as well as a gift for someone special. This year I have been putting more thought into what I would like than any other year and I still haven't come up with an idea. From an article in the Journal of Consumer Psychology; jewelry, especial very ostentatious pieces will usually be worn by individuals that think of themselves as a lower class or status than others.  The American population “thinks of ourselves as a classless society”, who is obsessed with social standing and demonstrates status by our possessions. Status is generally determined by racial or ethnic background, as well as what job we hold and where we have chosen to live.
Even if we do not intend to, people generally sort themselves with other individuals belonging to the same or similar social hierarchy. Social and status hierarchy based on items can be a false indicator of the individual’s actual status, but these impostors can easily be discovered with a second look. We observe these differences in social hierarchies mainly by an individual’s mannerisms; how they sit, react to situations, tactfulness and especially their use of language and dominance within the conversation. Whereas lower status individuals will start to mimic, basing their body language and way of speaking on higher status individuals.

So far we have established that social/ status hierarchy are important within society.  So, if status influences personal values, than an individual with lower status will typically desire high status items or products. Leading to the possible conclusion that, those’ within society who have the least ability to afford ostentations items desire them the most. In the past it was challenging for individuals to acquire status pieces due to their lack of credit and money but that has all changed, almost anyone is able to purchase on credit today. So before you commit to a shiny gift that is intend to show your love, take a minute and examine where the desire is coming from. Do really like the gift or are you getting it because it says something?
